ORM and NoSQL: Are They Compatible?

Java is the stronghold of Object-Oriented programming where ORMs proliferate like mushrooms. Do ORMs still bring benefits in the NoSQL world and polyglot persistence? We will also discuss the why and how of data design in NoSQL.

Like in the show, On n’est pas que des cobayes, we will attempt to make ORMs and NoSQL coexist and analyze the results. Among the challenges tackled, we can explore:

  • Can we survive with a single NoSQL product?
  • Does NoSQL imply nightmares of data duplication?
  • Is JPA and NoSQL like fitting a round peg in a square hole?
  • Can ORMs not properly abstract NoSQL data models?
  • Are ORMs like nitro, do they boost performance... or not?
  • Is abstracting NoSQL query languages too difficult?
  • Without native access to NoSQL APIs, is there no hope?
  • Do ORMs not really bring value in a NoSQL world?

Emmanuel Bernard

Emmanuel Bernard is a data platform architect in the JBoss portfolio at Red Hat. He oversees data-related projects, particularly the Hibernate portfolio from which he originated. Emmanuel joined the Hibernate team in 2003 and since then, his work is almost 100% open source. He led the Hibernate JPA implementation, founded and led Hibernate Search, Hibernate Validator. His latest venture is Hibernate OGM, but he also contributes to Ceylon, Awestruct, and a few other projects in his spare time. Emmanuel is a member of the JPA 2.1 Expert Group and responsible for the Bean Validation specification. He regularly speaks at various conferences and Java User Groups, notably JavaOne, JBoss World, Devoxx, and is co-author of [Hibernate Search in Action](http://emmanuelbernard.com/books/hsia/) published by Manning.
