In 2009, the death of the Java classpath was announced. Flat or hierarchical classloaders were to be replaced by modular systems and all our dependency problems were supposed to solve themselves. The Jigsaw project was supposed to accomplish this task. It will finally be integrated into JDK 9, which is scheduled to be released in 2017.
In the first part of this presentation, I’ll explain how the JDK’s classloaders work and show you through some examples the strange problems they pose. In the second part, I’ll present what Jigsaw will bring and explain what problems it will solve. I’ll compare it to existing solutions like OSGi and JBoss Modules. As usual, this session will end with a buffet offered by our sponsors.
